At Desert Sky Spine and Pain we blend common pain management treatments with innovative treatments so that your body is given the best possible tools to heal itself. Below is a list of possible treatments for your pain. Click the treatment to discover what it is and what conditions it’s used to treat.
Platelet-Rich Plasma Treatment (often referred to as PRP), involves using your own platelets to hasten healing in your body. PRP can treat a variety of pain-related conditions like tendonitis, muscle and joint injuries, arthritis-related pain and torn tendons. At Desert Sky, we love that this treatment uses your body’s own ability to heal itself. PRP can often help patients avoid surgery and prevent opioid dependency.
Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory steroid that is injected into a targeted area to relieve joint pain. In the hands of our skilled doctors, these injections are also used to break up knotty tissue. This targeted, near-instant relief treatment can be used to treat arthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis.
Hyaluronic Acid Injections are sometimes referred to as “Rooster Comb Injections.” Hyaluronic Acid is a building block of cartilage that works as a shock absorber when injected. This decreases inflammation, accelerates cartilage and joint healing while also blocking pain receptors. At Desert Sky, we use these injections most commonly for those who suffer from osteoarthritis and other joint pain.
Botox for migraines is FDA approved, which means it is often covered by insurance! Botox is a powerful muscle relaxer that can prevent migraines before they start! This treatment is reserved for those who suffer life-altering, debilitating migraines – typically more than 15 in a month.
Trigger Point Injections contain a combination of lidocaine, marcaine and cortisone. As the name suggests, we identify “trigger points” of pain within your body, and then inject the medication using the same dry needling technique we use for our Cortisone Injections to break up knotty tissue. This treatment can give patients immediate relief from their pain, without the use of opioid medication. This means you can get back to rest and play as soon as you leave our office!
Toradol is a very strong NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammator). We typically use Toradol injections in conjunction with Trigger Point Injections to calm inflamed muscles. Toradol is non-addictive and helps calm muscles quickly, so spasmodic events don’t have to mean time off of work or play. Though anyone experiencing muscle pain can benefit from these, they are commonly used by athletes as it is a non-steroid option to reduce inflammation and muscle spasms brought on by an increase to training load.
Nerve Blocks are very often used in place of surgery, or to diagnose the location and source of pain. A
Nerve Block does exactly that – it blocks the pain caused by an angry nerve. This treatment can be used for many conditions, but is most commonly used for arthritis, back, knee, and shoulder pain as well as to treat headaches.
A Peripheral Nerve Stimulator works almost like a TENS unit for your nerves. This device is implanted near the source of the pain to disrupt pain through an electric pulse. This treatment allows patients to wean down or completely off pain medication while also giving them a sense of control over their pain.
Just like the Nerve Stimulation, but implanted between the spinal cord and the vertebrae. This device is almost like a pacemaker for chronic pain. At Desert Sky, we often implant these after an operation has failed to bring the relief our patients hoped for, but this treatment can be used in place of invasive surgery! Our goal with this treatment is to wean our patient down or completely off daily pain medication, which is very often a reality because of Spinal Cord Stimulation.
Radiofrequency Ablation is a specific type of Nerve Ablation that uses radiofrequency waves to ablate, or burn, the nerve that is causing pain. This treatment provides a lasting source of relief for chronic pain sufferers (arthritis, back, neck and knee pain). It’s minimally invasive, and typically done without the use of general anesthesia. Pain relief typically lasts more than 2 years and is often covered by insurance for many conditions.
A kyphoplasty procedure uses x-ray guidance to place a needle through a small incision in the back and into the vertebral compression fracture. After the needle is accurately placed, a balloon is slowly inflated to help restore vertebral height and form a new cavity. Bone cement is then injected into the new cavity and quickly hardens which then alleviates pain by strengthening and solidifying the damaged vertebra.
A medial branch nerve block is a procedure in which an anesthetic is injected near small medial nerves connected to a specific facet joint. Typically several levels of the spine are injected in one procedure.
If the patient experiences marked pain relief immediately after the injection, then the facet joint is determined to be the source of the patient’s pain.
Steroidal injections into joints (ie. hip, shoulder, wrist) are intra-articular injections.
This procedure can help anyone with moderate to sever joint pain in ankles, elbows, hips knees, or shoulders.
